Something Green

Since today is St. Patrick's day, I decided to go with a three-way green theme.  First stop: The Irish.

I LOOOOOVE the Irish.

It seems like I am always reading books about Irish people. and over time, I've gotten kind of attached to them!
Besides learning about their culture and history, another perk of reading Irish novels is that there's always some dreamy irish guy to crush on. (they're not all nerdy looking like Conan, but they're all extremely charming) I've had crushes on more than one hunky (fictional) Irish man. And the fictional part is actually kind of a bonus because in your imagination, he's usually perfect in every way. So there does happen to be one specific fictional irish hottie that I had in mind...  His name is Connor Larkin and he is the hero of the bestselling novel, Trinity, an impossible-to-put-down EPIC of the Irish people in historic detail. You will cry. It's a total of 815 pages so its long but SOOO worth it! 60 consecutive weeks in The New York Times bestseller list, 36 weeks in the #1 position. It was written by Leon Uris (1976). I would highly recommend it. I LOVED this book.

So that's my gig with the Irish....part 1 of today's Green Theme

Part 2 has to do with the color green. I think 2009 will be an 'a-ha' year for many people concerning the colour green.  There's the obvious: society's switch to all things eco- or green-friendly. We all want to benefit the environment, and these days are all about figuring out how to implement these changes in our lives. I'm so glad that this kind of thinking is becoming nationwide. Now the goal is to not to stagnate. We need to keep moving forward, and I'm motivated by the millions that are already drastically changing their lives in order to leave a smaller footprint.

Today, however, I am talking about the green that you put into your BODY. That's right: Vegetables!!

This year, I am vowing to eat more greens!! It's amazing what greens do for you, especially raw ones. Today, I drank two green smoothies. It's this new kick, everyone's doing it. It was so delicious that I had another one later this evening. I thought a green smoothie was perfect for St. Paddy's day.

Here's the recipe:
**don't be scared by the ingredients. you have to actually try it before you say ewwww**
2 bananas
a handful of spinach
1 cup water

BLEND till smooth. Drinking your greens gives you protein, energy, and vital nutrients!

LAST, but not least,
Clare Green <-------- ie. my roommate

This Green chick is serious about the green movement as well.
She is doing a really sweet 2 month bike trip this summer as part of an eco-awareness group. Their mission is to bike along the coast of BC, visiting towns and educating kids about ways they can help the environment. I think its a noble thing to do, and just wanted to plug her blog about this cause.

You can check out Clare's fantastic cycling legs featured in my recent listings.....
